Looking for a Website Designer in KL? Here’s What I Would Check First
What a Klang Valley business owner should check first: local customers, language, WhatsApp, pricing, support and SEO.

Search “website designer KL” and you'll get a long list. Agencies in towers, freelancers in Subang, companies in Puchong, people overseas who say they're in KL. All of them look good on their own website. Of course. They're web designers.
My office is in Puchong, and most of my customers are around KL, PJ and Selangor. So here's what I would check if I were a Klang Valley business owner choosing someone today.
Do they understand your customers, not just your logo?
A customer in the Klang Valley is not a generic “user”. They might be checking your website while stuck in the jam on the Federal Highway. They might be comparing three contractors during lunch. They might be your auntie's friend who only reads Chinese, or a corporate buyer who wants proper English and a company profile.
A good designer asks things like:
- Who usually buys from you? Owners, managers, families?
- Which areas do your customers come from?
- Do they prefer English, Malay or Chinese?
- Do they call, WhatsApp, email or walk in?
If the designer never asks, the website will be designed for nobody in particular.
Language matters more in KL than people think
Klang Valley is mixed. Your customers may search in English, but think in Malay or Chinese. Sometimes one line in the customer's own language on the right page makes them more comfortable to contact you.
Not every business needs a multi-language website. But your designer should at least be able to talk to you about it, and understand how your customers speak. I speak English, Mandarin, Cantonese and Malay, and honestly, it helps when discussing a business with the owner. Things get lost in translation less.
Can you meet when it matters?
Most of a website project can be done over WhatsApp, email and video calls. That's normal now. But for the first discussion, or for a bigger project, sitting down together for an hour saves a lot of back and forth. You can show your printed brochure, your old website, your product samples.
A designer based nearby makes that easy. It's not a must. It's just nice to have the option.
WhatsApp is how Malaysians enquire
Here, many customers will not fill in a long form. They'll tap WhatsApp and type “Hi, how much?” A designer working with Malaysian businesses should know this and design for it:
- A clear WhatsApp button that's easy to tap on a phone.
- A ready message so the customer doesn't need to think what to type.
- Tracking, so you know how many WhatsApp clicks came from the website.

Pricing in KL
You'll find a wide range of prices in the Klang Valley, from very cheap packages to big agency projects. Don't judge only by the area. A designer in a fancy office isn't automatically better, and one working from a small office isn't automatically cheaper or worse.
Ask every one of them for the same thing: a written list of pages, features and yearly costs. Then compare. This article explains what changes the price: how much a website really costs in Malaysia.
Support after launch
Your business will change. New service, new branch, new phone number, a festive promotion. Ask:
- How fast do they normally reply?
- How are small changes charged?
- Can your staff update simple things themselves?
Many of my customers have stayed with me since 2017. Not because of a contract. Because when they WhatsApp “Lucian, can change this ah?”, it gets done. That's the kind of relationship you want, with whoever you pick.
Look for business thinking
A website designer should care whether the website brings enquiries, not only whether it looks nice. Besides design, I have more than 15 years of sales experience in banking, insurance and property. So when I look at a website, I look at it like a salesperson. What is the customer worried about? What proof do they need? What makes them finally say, “Okay, let me WhatsApp them”?
You don't need a designer with a sales background. But you do want one who thinks about your sales.
SEO for local searches
If you want people in your area to find you on Google, the website needs a proper foundation: clear pages for each service, good page titles, your address and phone number written consistently, and a connection to Google Search Console. A Google Business Profile helps a lot for local searches too.
Be careful of anyone who promises “page one in KL” quickly. Nobody controls Google. A good designer gives you a strong foundation and explains what takes time.
And if your website already gets visitors but no enquiries, that's a different problem. I wrote about it here: people visit but nobody enquires.
My short list
- Asks about your customers before your colours.
- Shows live work that looks good on your phone.
- Explains what you'll own.
- Designs for WhatsApp and mobile first.
- Gives a clear written scope and yearly costs.
- Replies when you need them, after launch too.
