What Should a Business Website Actually Have? 15 Things Malaysian SMEs Need
A practical 15 point checklist for Malaysian SME websites, and why each one matters.

A business website doesn't need to be fancy. It needs to do a few important jobs well: tell people what you do, make them trust you, and make it easy to contact you.
Here are the 15 things I think every Malaysian SME website should have, and why each one matters. Use it as a checklist for your current website, or as a brief for your next one.
The message
1. A clear headline on the first screen
Within a few seconds, a visitor should know what you do and who it's for. “Aircond servicing and repair for homes in Puchong and Subang” beats “Your Trusted Partner in Excellence”. If people have to guess, many leave.
2. Your services, explained simply
List what you actually sell, in the words your customers use. If you have several main services, give each one its own page. It helps customers find the right thing and helps Google understand what you offer.
3. Company information
Your registered business name, how long you've been operating, where you're based and which areas you serve. People want to know there's a real company behind the website.
The trust
4. Real work
Photos of your projects, products, shop, team or happy customers. Real photos beat stock photos almost every time. A customer wants to see what they'll actually get.
5. Proof that others trust you
Customer feedback, Google reviews, certificates, memberships, well-known clients you're allowed to mention. Strangers trust businesses that other people already trust.
6. Clear contact details
Phone number, WhatsApp, email, address and operating hours. Make sure they're the same everywhere: website, Google Business Profile, Facebook. Mismatched details confuse customers and Google.
The action
7. A WhatsApp button
For many Malaysian customers, WhatsApp is the easiest way to ask. Make the button easy to see and tap on phone. A ready-made first message helps people who don't know what to type.
8. A simple online form
Some people prefer not to chat, especially for bigger projects or after office hours. Keep the form short: name, phone, email and what they need. Then test it yourself, to make sure the messages actually reach someone.
9. A clear call to action on every important page
After reading a service page, what should the customer do? “WhatsApp us for a quote”, “Book a site visit”, “Ask for a price”. Say it clearly, and say it more than once on long pages.
The technical foundation
10. Designed properly for mobile
Many of your customers will only ever see your website on a phone. Readable text, easy buttons, a simple menu. Not just a desktop page squeezed smaller.
11. Fast loading
People don't wait. Compressed images, decent hosting and not too many add-ons keep your website quick, especially on mobile data.
12. A proper SEO structure
One clear main heading per page, a useful page title and description, clean page addresses, image descriptions and a sitemap. This is the foundation that helps Google understand and show your website. It doesn't guarantee rankings, but without it, you start with a handicap.
13. Google Analytics and Search Console
So you know how many people visit, where they come from, which pages they read and how many tap WhatsApp. Without this, every decision about your website is a guess. Make sure both are under your company's Google account.
The things owners forget
14. A privacy notice
If your website collects names, phone numbers or emails through a form, you're handling personal data. Malaysia has the Personal Data Protection Act 2010 (PDPA). A simple privacy notice explaining what you collect and why is good practice. If you're unsure what your business needs, check with someone qualified.
15. Ownership and easy editing
You should own your domain, have access to your website and be able to update simple things yourself, like prices, photos and promotions. A website you can't update quickly becomes out of date quickly. I wrote more about this in you paid for the website, but do you actually own it?
