Excel or Google Sheets? Which Is Better for Small Business?
Excel and Google Sheets can both run a surprising amount of a small business. The better choice depends on how your team works.

Excel is powerful
Excel is excellent for heavy spreadsheets, formulas and offline work.
Good for
- Finance models
- Large spreadsheets
- Advanced formulas
- Offline use
Google Sheets is easy for teamwork
When several people need to view and update the same sheet, Google Sheets is very convenient.
Good for
- Shared trackers
- Simple operations
- Live collaboration
- Quick access
The bigger question is whether a spreadsheet is still enough
If the team spends all day fixing formulas and controlling versions, the problem is no longer Excel versus Sheets.
Warning signs
- Duplicate data
- Too many tabs
- Permission problems
- Manual reporting
My view
Use spreadsheets while they remain simple. Move to a proper system when the spreadsheet starts controlling your business instead of helping it.
