How Much Should You Pay a Freelance Web Designer in Malaysia?

Instead of one magic number, here's what you're actually paying for, so you can judge any freelancer's quotation yourself.

When you ask a freelancer for a price, you're really asking: “How much work is my website, and how good is the person doing it?” Two freelancers can quote very differently for what sounds like the same thing, and both can be fair.

So instead of giving you one magic number, let me show you what you're actually paying for. Once you understand the parts, you can judge any quotation yourself.

Freelancers usually quote per project

Most freelance web designers in Malaysia give one price for the whole project, not an hourly rate. That's good for you. You know the total before you start.

But a project price is only as good as the scope written next to it. “Website, RM3,000” tells you nothing. “8 pages, custom design, mobile ready, WhatsApp button, contact form, Google Analytics, 2 rounds of changes” tells you a lot.

Always ask for the scope in writing. If someone refuses to write it down, that's your answer.

The parts that make up the price

Number of pages

Each page needs planning, design, content and checking on phone. A one-page website and a 15-page website are different jobs. Before asking for quotes, list the pages you think you need: Home, About, each main service, Projects, Contact. It makes every quote easier to compare.

Design: template or made for you

Template work means using a ready layout and filling it in. It's faster and cheaper. Custom design means the layout is planned around your customers: what they need to see first, what makes them trust you, where they tap to contact you. That takes more thinking, and thinking is the expensive part.

Mobile

Most of your visitors will open your website on a phone. “Mobile responsive” should never be an add-on. But there's a difference between a website that simply shrinks on a phone, and one that was actually designed for phone users. Ask the designer to show you their past work on your own phone.

SEO foundation

A basic SEO setup means proper page titles, one clear heading per page, clean URLs, image descriptions, a sitemap and connecting Google Search Console. It doesn't guarantee page one. It means Google can understand your website properly. Some freelancers include this. Some don't know how. Ask.

Content

Who writes the words? If you give everything ready, the price can be lower. If the designer helps plan the message, writes headings and organises your services so a normal customer understands them, that's extra work. In my experience, this part decides whether a website gets enquiries more than the colours do.

Forms and functions

A simple contact form is normal. Booking calendars, online payment, product filters, member areas or connections to your other systems take more building and testing. Each function adds to the price, and each one needs someone to maintain it later.

Support after launch

What happens when you want to change a phone number next year? Some freelancers include a support period. Some charge per change. Some disappear. Ask how changes are handled and how they're charged, before you pay.

Experience

This one is harder to see on a quotation. An experienced designer has made the mistakes already, on other people's projects. After designing 582 websites, I can usually tell within a few minutes what will confuse a visitor, which section people will skip, and where the WhatsApp button needs to be. You pay for that judgement, and it saves you from paying for a second website later.

So what's a fair price?

It depends on the scope, so I won't pretend there is one number. As one real example, my own packages are:

  • Starter Landing Page: RM1,500 for one focused page.
  • Business Website: RM2,500 to RM5,000 for 6 to 20 pages.
  • Signature Website: RM5,000 to RM30,000+ for bigger, more custom websites.

My pricing usually sits somewhere in the middle. Not the cheapest, not agency prices. You can see what's included in my website packages. Other freelancers will price differently, and that's fine. What matters is that the price matches the scope.

Signs the price is too good to be true

A low price is not automatically bad. A new business with a small budget may only need something simple. But be careful when:

  • The quote has a total but no list of pages or features.
  • Nobody asks about your customers or your business.
  • The domain will be registered under the designer's name, “to make it easier”.
  • There's no mention of mobile, SEO or what happens after launch.
  • Every small change later is a new quotation.

I explained this side in more detail here: cheap website or professional website.

Don't decide on price alone

The cheapest quote can become expensive if you rebuild in two years. The most expensive quote is not automatically the best. Compare scope, compare people, then compare price.
