Full Time, Part Time or Contract? Which Staff Type Should You Hire?
Full time, part time and contract workers are not simply three names for the same arrangement. The right choice depends on how permanent the work is and what the business actually needs.

Full time, part time and contract workers are not simply three names for the same arrangement. The right choice depends on how permanent the work is and what the business actually needs.
Full time suits ongoing work
If the role is needed every working day and is part of normal operations, full time employment is usually easier to manage.
Examples
- Admin
- Operations
- Sales team
- Accounts
- Customer service
Part time suits limited hours
Part time can work when the workload is predictable but does not justify a full schedule.
Examples
- Weekend support
- Peak hours
- Events
- Short daily shifts
Contract suits defined periods or projects
A contract role may make sense when the work has a clear project or fixed period, subject to Malaysian employment rules.
Be clear
- Start and end terms
- Scope
- Payment
- Working arrangement
- Legal obligations
My view
Do not choose a label simply to avoid responsibilities. The real working relationship matters. If you are unsure, check the latest Malaysian employment rules or speak to an HR professional.
